Service Description

Studies indicate that a significant portion of the population have experienced trauma, or harmful or life-threatening events which have impacted their everyday functioning or well-being. Research shows that individuals living in poverty or with a disability are even more at risk for having experienced trauma. In addition, the current global pandemic and nationwide social justice and civil rights movement are adding to the trauma felt by our communities—and students are just as susceptible to the impacts of trauma as anyone else. Though presentations, selected readings and multi-media sources, written activities, and discussions, this course will examine trauma and its possible effects on students and teachers, and provide participants with ways to intervene against harmful effects. The 45-hour course will start March 8, 2025 and be delivered remotely on-line, through Google Classroom. The first four sessions will be delivered asynchronously (you work at your own time and pace), with instructor facilitation. There are biweekly assignments due and forum discussion is encouraged. The final two classes will be synchronous, virtual discussions on May 10th and 17th. The course will explore the research on toxic stress, and explain how it can impact a child’s education. It will explore the key principles of a trauma-informed approach and how they apply in an educational setting. Participants will learn concrete tools to reconsider space organization based on trauma-informed principles; avoid the re-traumatization of students; help students regulate their emotions; interrupt the “school-to-prison pipeline” through which students with disabilities and students of color experience disproportionate discipline; de-escalate situations when necessary; address racially- and culturally-sensitive topics; and help students build resilience. NYC DOE TEACHER REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: To receive full CTLE and salary differential credit for this course you must register with ASPDP on their website. If you do not complete the ASPDP registration by the registration deadline, you will not be eligible for A+ or P credits towards your salary differential. Cancellation Policy

Participants must attend the full session of the synchronous meetings. Participants joining more than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time may not be admitted to the session. If a participant must miss the session, he or she should reach out to the instructor as soon as it becomes evident, to discuss whether the absence may be made up at another time. In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of courses must be received prior to the start of the course. A credit, which may be used for other services or purchases from Cowart Trauma Informed Partnership, may be provided for enrollments cancelled after the course begins.
